Customer service so fine-tuned, It's almost creepy.

At the Four Season Palm Beach Ocean Bistro dining on $36 Lobster BLT Salad with avocado and tarragon dressing.

Chris: "I really enjoyed meeting Joseph when we toured the guestrooms. What's his title? Director of Housekeeping?"

Carolina Sotomayor, Director of Sales: "We love Joseph. He was Director of Housekeeping at Four Seasons Nevis, but Hurricane Wilma basically leveled that property, so he joined Four Season Palm Beach."

Connie: "Chris just can't get enough of the behind-the-scenes stuff."

Chris: "Its true. I mean, how would I ever know that the Four Seasons housekeepers never push carts down the hallways, or that they clean the room clockwise with the bed at 12 o'clock, or that the rooms are inspected three times before a guest can even check-in?"

---

Speaking of clockwork, exactly when we turn the corner to walk down a hallway of guestrooms, Joseph happens to walk towards us from the other direction, He smiles, greets me by name and offers a warm handshake: "Hello Mr. Bartolemey." There is a soft, distant, Haitian melody to his voice.

Joseph and Carolina are exceptionally proud of the recent hotel redesign by Canadian designer Brian Gluckstein. Gluckstein fashioned the rooms to give the impression of a  luxury beachfront residence. A few doggy sniffs in the room speak of pleasant newness.

Joseph wasn't the only chance encounter. As we tour the property, key management, owners and staff happen to run into us, and happen to unflinchingly know my name.

Steve, the General Manager near the front desk: "Welcome to Four Season's Palm Beach Mr. Bartholomew."

Rick, Spa Director: "Mr. Bartholomew, I apologize for not being able to spend more time with you during your visit to our spa." He found us at our lunch table after he finished with a pop-up tour with some clients. "Here's my card. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you."

Julia and Josh, at the pool: "Hello Mr. Bartholomew!" They hand over a pool services menu with my name embossed in black lettering at the top. "How is your day? Here at the pool we offer guests an amenity every 30 minutes. Would you like an Evian spritz? Please, enjoy one of our fresh mango smoothies."

This is only a sampling of the Four Seasons people I meet, get business cards from, and from which I receive expressions of delight that I would consider their hotel for my meeting.

What is so mind boggling, is the casual air, and the perfect timing with which these hallway meetings occur. I would kill to sit in on the planning meeting and see the by-the-second-schedule created for my visit.

Back at the Ocean Bistro overlooking the pool and ocean. It had just started to rain. Pool guests bolt from the pool to an awning where they wait for the cloudburst to pass. On cue, pool staff began distributing mugs of hot chocolate.

Carolina: "Let me preface this comment by saying that as a general rule I don't like Adam Sandler, or his movies. . .But have you seen that movie he's in with the butler who is always anticipating his needs before Adam Sandler's character even knows what he wants?"

Chris: "I know I saw that one. I remember something about feet or socks maybe. . . It seems like every time Adam Sandler turned around the butler was there with whatever he was about to want or need. He was slightly creeped out by it so I think he called the butler 'sneaky feet'."

Carolina: "Sometimes this," motioning to the smiling pool attendants with a turn of head and bounce of black curls, "makes me think of that movie."

  2. really enjoying these posts. glad that this trip was so good. always love your keen observational and inclusionary style with humor. i'd love to sit in on a meeting like that, too. it may be part of "the business" yet i think it takes someone sincere to be able to provide such service. i like joseph.

  3. if it's not sincere, it would definitely feel "creepy." ;) almost a bit of just under your skin annoying disgust over trickiness. like i said yesterday--the story behind the story is always incredibly intriguing. i'd love to check out the feel myself. curious. ever so fun that you get to...spritz's, hot chocolate? hmmm...love it ;)
