Mauna Kea Surprise

Hotel Geek Hawaii Winner: Best Design Hotel, Best Hotel Beach

"Isn't it great in those rare instances when the age of a property is an asset?" I heard myself saying loud enough so that Naomi, the director of sales, could hear all the way at the front.

Ever heard of Rockresorts? Laurence S. Rockefeller, third-generation moneybags, pioneered the concept of the ecohotel back in the 1950s. He created a few hobby hotels with floor-to-ceiling windows, verandas, deck furniture guests never wanted to leave, all with a focus on modernist International architecture melding with the environment.

I have a suspicion that he and Ayn Rand were friends. And that Frank is involved somehow.

This is a case of intentional office building as hotel where guests get down to the serious biz of hitting Mauumae beach. And the beach is a stunner.

Rooms take nothing away from the view. TVs lie concealed behind sliding wood panels. Showers and tubs feel like an extension on the balcony. Orange towels on the beach jive with accents throughout.

So why the teachers pet act? I think the resort is what the bad internationalist university buildings I studied in were trying to imitate. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is an original, and I was on an Architecture History class tour. I felt the joy of two unexpected elements, i.e. office building and beach hotel, creating bliss, and something inside wanted Naomi to know I was in on it.
