Hawaii Site Inspection Trip: The Big Island of Hawaii
"Did I come all this way for this?" is an oft-uttered phrase by first timers to Hawaii's Big Island. Kona airport and the resort side of the island is covered in a 19th century lava flow. It looks like it happened yesterday. No plants, no green, just miles and miles of rough, sweltering a'a lava fields. Lush green Hawaii has marketed itself so well that most don't anticipate the desert.
As an oasis to the wanderer on this moonscape part of the isle, the Fairmont Orchid, Mauna Lani, Four Seasons Hualalai, and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, lay tucked away in verdant coves along found on its rocky shores.
Hilo, the tropical side of the island, suspiciously remains free of any resorts or even a half decent motel. Missed opportunity? Plot to keep away tourists who are rain adverse anyway? Probably.
